What are the pros? Low maintenance, easy to grow

What are the cons? should have planted more

Review:

I planted seeds around the first of February indoors, transplanted outdoor around the first of April. I only planted 3 plants and all yielded large beautiful heads of broccoli- these were harvested around mid-late May. I have historically not been a big broccoli fan, but this home grown broccoli has converted me!

What are the pros? compact head, great taste

What are the cons? none

Review:

These broccoli have been the best we have grown so far. We started them indoors due to our location (Northern Minnesota) and corresponding short growing season. The heads were nice and compact with a great taste. My daughter said it is the best broccoli she has ever tasted. Coming from an eight year old that's a pretty big complement. Will grow again next year.

What are the pros? Taste

What are the cons? Seedling issues

Review:

I planted 4 of these in the spring to see how they would fair before my main fall crop. Out of the 4, 1 made it. I had a bad case of root maggots in the spring, so much of this could have been solved with some preventative measures. The plant is rather small but produced a nice head of broccoli that was sweet and tasty! Can't wait to see how they do in the fall.

What are the pros? Large heads, takes heat well

What are the cons? None

Review:

This variety is a winner! I got the plants out a bit late, thinking that they probably wouldn't have time to make large heads before the heat hit. To my surprise they grew into VERY large plants with large leaves, but with no sign of heads forming. I kept wondering why the heads weren't starting. At that point the weather started getting hot so I was sure that I would end up eating leaves but not much in the way of heads. Other varieties that I have grown did not head well after the weather got hot. I couldn't believe it! The heads finally started forming and even in the heat grew large, rivaling any that I've grown or bought. There were a few smaller yet still decent sized heads, but most were very large. The plants were beautiful and the flavor was great. After cutting the heads I picked side shoots and leaves until the harlequin bugs appeared and then pulled them out. This year I grew about 30 plants; next year I'll plant a lot more.

What are the pros? Early and easy to grow!

What are the cons? none I am happy!!

Review:

Waltham 29 was a great choice this year! I live in zone 6, right at the border between 6A and 6B. I started this broccoli inside mid-March, and set it out a month later in mid-April under summerweight fabric (not frost protection, insect protection). A semi-harsh frost at the end of April did a little damage but every plant came back with vengence! Now it is early June and I have been picking huge (up to 10 inches across) heads of delicious broccoli! Ive kept the plants under the fabric all this time to keep pests (esp. caterpillars) off and it has worked, no bug damage! From seed it has taken nearly 3 months till harvest, but from transplant not even 2! I think that is quick for broccoli especially an old timer like this one! I definitely recommend this one and I always recommend insect protection like fabric over any kind of chemical or organic pesticide. Happy Growing!!
