What are the cons? Can get VERY spiny
I have grown these for the past 2 years. Very productive. They have stayed mild-flavored as my green ones turned bitter. I find that I have NO bitterness when fermenting. They look great as pickles, Very mild flavor when sliced and eaten fresh. They tend to be earlier than my green varieties and grow longer into the season, however, later in the season they can become EXTREMELY covered in spines, almost like a fuzzy cactus. And yes, they will stick in your fingers. They disappear during ferment, but the bumps left behind are still kind of weird. The skins can also become rather thick, which has a weird mouth-feel as a pickle.
Will still continue to grow a few plants a year.
