This is an excellent winter cover crop, especially for those who do not want to put the garden to bed early in order to sow a cover crop. Winter rye is the fastest growing fall cover crop as far as cereal grains go. You may sow heavily in late fall, plants will grow in very cold temperatures and the extensive and deep root system will help to avoid erosion over the winter. The roots will also improve soil tilth and improve compacted soil. Winter rye will also grow in drought conditions as well as in areas with low fertility.

Review:

I bought this seed based on Ed Smith's Vegetable Gardener's Bible advice for preparing your fall garden for bed. We have a very large garden and I'm not putting fall veggies in all the plots so I thought I'd plant winter rye to help our mostly clay soil get some aeration. Just raked in the seed and it was up two inches in three days! My plants haven't reached maturity yet, but I'm already ordering more seed for my other beds. I bet I can put this in a week before first frost, or maybe even later and still have a great green compost. My only wish is that it came in a bigger bag (1lb)
