Yellow Canary Creeper Nasturtium

(Topaeolum peregrinum) Exotic South American native vine reaches 15 feet, yet is no harder to grow than its cousin, the garden nasturtium. Round, deeply lobed leaves are edible: bizarre, bright yellow orchid-like flowers are produced all summer long; must be seen to be believed.

What are the pros? Beautiful coverage

What are the cons? Bad seeds

Review:

I have grown canary bird vines for years up here in Alaska. Some years the plants just don't grow, but when they do they are a wonderful surprise. I usually start early inside and then gently transplant outside. This year we had an amazing early summer and my vines grew well. Some years they don't. I keep planting them cause when they do grow they are worth it. Just beautiful, delicate, bright yellow flowers, that look like little orchids. I just love them.

What are the pros? unique, pretty flowers

What are the cons? small flower to foliage ratio

Review:

I had trouble with germination of these seeds (probably less than 50% germination), but the ones that did germinated were pretty tough and stood up to uneven watering. The vines are very, very long, with smaller foliage than other nasturtiums, and it seemed to take forever for any blooms to appear. Each plant appears to be one long, slender, unbranching vine. They aren't at all "full," like other climbing nasturtiums. They almost seem to disappear into the surrounding plants (I planted mine on the tomato trellises). Maybe mine needed more direct sunlight and got too shaded? It's September 6th, and the first flowers opened a few days ago, whereas I've had regular nasturtiums blooming for weeks and weeks. Also, the flowers were significantly smaller than I'd expected. If a regular nasturtium blossom is 1.5 to 2" across, these guys are about 3/4" across. The petals are very unusual and beautiful, almost orchid-like, and I intend to take them to the State Fair to show them off.

What are the pros? Interesting flowers

What are the cons? Nothing!

Review:

This season was way too cold for any type of nasturtium to amount to much before the end of the growing season, but these are worth it. Unfortunately, the weather killed off all but two, but I will be ordering more seeds for next year. The flowers are unique and have a wonderful color!
