At last, someone has bred a basil to accentuate the stunning flower heads! Still a culinary basil, but the rich purple flower heads are huge! Use the flowers in arrangements, the leaves in your favorite recipes. A very choice milestone of conventional plant breeding!

Review:

I love this basil plant. I bought seeds two years ago, dug up the plants in the fall and carried them thru the winter. They were pretty sad looking when I planted them in May, but I cut them back and they rewarded me with small bush sized plants by August. I also was able to cut and start more plants for next year so I don't have such a big plant taking up space. Just a couple plants provided me, family and friends with basil all summer long. The only other basil I grow now is lemon and lime.

Review:

This basil is wonderful and is my go to basil. As I write I'm collecting seed. It has perennialized in my yard. I pull off the flower heads a few at a time and the plant just gets bigger and fuller. It is ornamenal as well as the shape and color look good at all times.

What are the pros? Pretty, easy to grow, delish

What are the cons? None

Review:

What a fantastic plant. Germinates and grows easily, beautiful purple stems, large lush leaves, amazing smell, fabulous taste...a touch of anise along with basil. While my Genovese and purple basil went to seed and petered out by mid to late summer, Cardinal basil is still going strong here in early October and shows no signs of developing flowers yet. I was looking forward to the purple flowers, but the fact that I'm still getting tons of fresh leaves for months and months more than makes up for the lack of flowers. This outdoes Genovese basil by a mile. I'll be growing this every year.

What are the pros? Lush and pretty

What are the cons? None

Review:

When all other basil had to be pulled due to Downy Mildew, this Cardinal basil just kept on going, producing crisp, vigorous foliage, and...finally, pretty purple flowers late summer. Not every plant bloomed for us, which was not our goal, but the delight of having basil with our tomatoes when all other basil got diseased, is priceless! Does not seem to be bothered much by this disease. Will definately grow this again in my garden!

What are the pros? Easy, THE SMELL! pest free!

What are the cons? NONE!

Review:

By far one of the best and easiest plants to grow! I have multiple extra trays because it grew so well! The smell, even from seedlings, can be over powering and its an eye catcher once it gets growing! I've already run two batches of leaves through a dehydrator and they come out very well. Fusarium wilt has wiped out my pepper crop, multiple varieties, but basil seems unaffected by it even when growing in the same garden as my peppers! there are a hand full of leaves on one plant that have brown spots on them, everything else is pristine. I'll be growing this every year, both as potted plants to sell, fresh, and dehydrated leaves! Its a must have for any garden or even a window! Does well in pots! Probably the easiest to grow plant out there!
