Basil - Corsican

Mediterranean heirloom type from Napoleon’s island birthplace off the French and Italian coasts. This versatile type comes in varying degrees of green to purple, often spectacularly mottled in both. A competent culinary type that makes a scintillating contribution in the border as well. Recommended!

What are the pros? Appearance, flavor, easy

What are the cons? None

Review:

Love this basil! My husband and I love to experiment with different varieties, and this one works very well for us. We are sometimes neglectful plant growers, and this plant is very forgiving. It has thrived well in container. It looks beautiful next to our rose bush. The flavor is great raw and perfect for summer: mild anise/licorice flavor to start and then a minty aftertaste. I find it is very cooling in the summer heat.

This plant is fragrant, easy to maintain, a great producer and not to mention beautiful. To my surprise it grew extremely well in South Western region of Ohio.

What are the pros? Color, slow to flower

What are the cons? none really

Review:

I've grown lots of different types of this herb from here and this one lasted the longest before it went to flower. I planted seeds in early May and these plants didn't flower until mid-August. The purple color makes any dish stand out. the flavor was good and mild. I'll grow this again for sure.

What are the pros? Handsome, long season, tasty

What are the cons? smaller leaves, but so what?

Review:

I have suspected that some basil types did not like the dry air where we live, so I ordered a type that came from a Mediterranean climate, and this variety was really successful and pleasing. Leaves were smaller than many types and a bit sparse on the stems, but the plants made up for this in height, to nearly a yard tall. The purple color was handsome. I made pesto from this a few times and found it the most flavorful ever. Plants lasted nearly to December here in California.

What are the pros? Visually pleasing.

What are the cons? Slow grower.

Review:

Germination rate is high for this very attractive and visually pleasing plant. I have not had it long enough to eat...yet...so I can't say much for the flavor. It seems to be a slow grower, but it sure does pack a lot of visual punch. Of course, I'm comparing this heirloom variety to a modern variety that I have grown recently. Overall, worth it. I really enjoy growing this so far.
