What are the pros? Slow bolt.

What are the cons? None

Review:

????? I plant this for cut and come again summer salads. When lettuce bolts, Batavian Endive ignores the heat and keeps producing. Leaves are a bit crunchier than lettuce. Mine are 4" high and spaced 10" apart. I use them green and don't bother to blanch them.

What are the pros? Resilient, Good producer

What are the cons? None

Review:

100% germination rate! Sowed in mid July for overwintering and they did fantastically well all the way through April of next year. I prefer this endive lightly saut?ed, it’s a bit tough for salads. Make sure to thin them aggressively, when crowded the inner parts tend to rot in cool rainy winters we have in the PNW.

What are the pros? Productivity

What are the cons? None

Review:

I have tried many kinds of lettuce, but never endive, since I was told it was bitter. But I tried this and found that it was a very productive salad green in my cut-and-come-again garden, and did not taste bitter at all. I suppose it might have if I left it longer, but it was eaten young, and no, I didn't try blanching it. I start salad greens every two weeks indoors to avoid the summer heat and Batavian Endive responded very well with high germination.

What are the pros? Not bothered by insects

What are the cons? Deer love it

Review:

This is a reliable chicory. I start it in early summer, the last week of June or first week of July, and it grows well in my outdoor seedbed. It grows well through heat and drought and is ready to eat in the early fall. It can be blanched for a week with a flower pot saucer (put duct tape on the whole to for darkness) to make a mild, light-colored heard. The only problem with it is that deer love it and will eat it down to the ground. As long as the temps are mild and the days are >10 hours long, it will keep growing though.

What are the pros? Flavour

What are the cons? none

Review:

I grew this endive with 2 others over the winter. It was early May before they bolted, temp in the 80's. Loved the flavour, it even surprised a veteran 72 yr old gardener!
