Description

(Beta vulgaris). This old home garden and market variety is deservedly the most popular all-purpose red beet, with uniform and smooth, blood-red roots that are sweet and tasty. The 14-inch tops make good greens, especially in the baby stage.  Growers have depended on this vigorous variety since it was introduced with much excitement by the D.M. Ferry seed company in 1892. A look back at the original listing shows an exuberant half-page ad dedicated to their favorite new beet with “the most perfectly shaped and smoothest roots.” Growers are still smitten with this variety over 100 years after its introduction.

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Detroit Dark Red beets thrive in cool weather, making them perfect for spring and fall planting. They prefer full sun, but can tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter climates. The ideal soil pH is slightly acidic to neutral (6.0 to 7.0), and the soil should be well-draining and rich in organic matter. Consistent watering is key, but avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot. Thin early for best results.

When to Grow

Plant Detroit Dark Red beets in early spring, about 3-4 weeks before the last expected frost, or in late summer for a fall harvest. They can germinate in soil temperatures as low as 40 F, but 50 - 85 F is optimal for faster germination. Beets are frost-tolerant and can be grown in USDA Hardiness Zones 2-10.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds directly into the garden 1 inch deep and 1-2 inches apart, in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart. For container gardening, use a pot that is at least 12 inches deep. After sowing, gently firm the soil over the seeds and keep it moist until germination, which typically occurs in 14-21 days. Thinning is necessary once seedlings reach 2 inches tall, spacing them 4-6 inches apart for optimal root development.

How to Grow

Once established, beets require regular watering, especially during dry spells. Mulching can help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Fertilize lightly with a balanced fertilizer every 2-4 weeks. Beets can be harvested when they are 2-3 inches in diameter, typically 55 days after planting. Harvest by gently loosening the soil and pulling the roots.

How to Save

  • Beets are biennial, which means they don’t flower until the second year of growth.
  • In the first year, when frost approaches, either try to overwinter them in the ground with floating row cover (a bit risky if you live in the north) or dig up the choicest plant before a freeze and store it indoors in a cool, dry, dark location until spring.
  • Replant after the last spring frost and allow to flower.
  • Beets are wind-pollinated and will easily cross with other beet varieties that are flowering, as well as with Swiss chards (which fortunately very rarely flower without assistance).
  • Properly stored seeds should remain viable for 5 years.
