This spectacular super-food is native throughout Central Asia. The black goji berry is very rarely found in Western cuisine, but has long been celebrated in the Himalayan region as a potent medicinal and health food. The black goji is known to be more healthful and potent than the more widely known red goji, and we find the flavor sweeter. The tasty, inky-black berries are exceptionally high in antioxidants and are said to boost the immune system and improve circulation. Thanks to their ability to fight free radicals, they have been hailed as a food to promote healthy, graceful aging. The potent berries create an outstanding blue color when steeped or added to foods. These tasty berries are quickly becoming a popular super fruit added to smoothies and brewed into tea. The dried berries are great in granola and muffins or snacked on alone; you can also eat the berries fresh off the plant. Steep the berries into a beautiful blue tea; adding a few drops of lemon will turn the tea a lovely purple/pink color. Gardeners will be pleased to know this exciting berry is highly prolific and easy to grow! Plants thrive in zones 5-10. It grows as a shrub reaching 4-6 feet in height and the plants are self fertile. The fruit ripens from summer through early Fall.

What are the pros? Berries at start of 2nd year

What are the cons? Thorns can smart

Review:

I got seed from BCHS & started late last summer. I grew several plants inside under lights until Spring, when I transplanted two plants into a large barrel planter. They took time to begin to thrive & grow, but finally did. As summer got going, they were blooming profusely; about two weeks ago started forming berries! I am thrilled that they are fruiting, when it has only been slightly more than one year. I have watered regularly, letting the soil mostly dry before watering again. I have fertilized about once a month. This is in full sun, with no shade and extreme Texas heat. I did put a trellis and stakes up behind the plant, and have the branches supported since they don't really climb. Will probably thin some branches before next year. Can't wait to dry a batch of berries! Thanks Randel for your help! BC is the best!

What are the pros? Everything so far

What are the cons? Nothing so far

Review:

We bought these seeds at the beginning of the year, and started them on a heat mat in our greenhouse. The packet contained 80 seeds, and I planted all of them in hopes of choosing the best few to go into the earth. Of the 80, about 70 grew to a decent size, but 4 were clearly more vigorous than the rest, so we kept them, and composted the rest. Three of them have been in the ground for a couple months now, and they look great! One is the clear winner between these three, but we’re glad to have three plants in the earth for pollination reasons. I don’t expect them to flower this year, but I’m confident that we’ll get flowers and hopefully fruit next year. Long story short, I recommend planting the whole pack, and choosing the best ones. Considering the variation in seed quality that most plant mothers create, it’s not worth the risk to just plant a few and hope for the best. Thank you baker creek for continuously supplying top notch seeds! I’ll continue posting updates on our Instagram.

What are the pros? Germination rate

What are the cons? Don't know

Review:

Awesome germination rate, close to 100%. But when I transferred them all died :( some in a week, others in a month. I'm not a big garden, it is my first year...maybe I did something wrong, wish i knew what exactly..cause other plants are good, actually not all of them))) but the vast majority)))

What are the pros?

What are the cons?

Review:

I started 15 in the rapid rooter brand starter plugs and put it on a heat mat. All but maybe 1 germinated that was about 8 weeks ago and all are healthy about 2 inches tall. I look forward to seeing how they grow.

What are the pros? There is no likes............

What are the cons? The germination was bad.

Review:

I planted 5 of the seeds, only one came up. It grew slowly. After a few months I decided to check for a photo, I found out that what I was growing was nothing like the picture. Had to give it an overall rating of one because that the way it is set up.
