Black Turtle Bean

Bush, 95 days--Splendid dark purple-black bean that is widely grown throughout Latin America, and known there by numerous common names. The compact bush plants are very productive and yield reliably even in the north! Flavor is rich and texture is meaty—try these in vegetarian chili or as frijoles refritos in burritos. Due to the coloration, this variety offers the bonus of a high anthocyanin content too! We offer a select northern hardy strain that has been grown for many years by the Doug Baty family of Dixon, Montana, but orginally collected in a village in Mexico.

What are the pros? Great germination

What are the cons? Not a bush bean!

Review:

I'm not sure why this is listed as a bush bean when it definitely is a climber! I garden in a very small area and everything has to have a very specific growth habit or it throws the whole plan off. So while I love the beans themselves, great flavor, I'm a little frustrated by the description of "bush". I highly recommend this bean for the flavor but plan for climbers. If it had been a true bush bean I would have given it a solid 5 stars.

Review:

Impressive bean. A bed of these survived being eaten down to only a few tiny new leaves and rebounded to produce a decent crop here in northern Michigan.

What are the pros? So, so easy to germinate

What are the cons? None

Review:

This is a beautiful plant, with unique looking foliage. I have gotten a hundred percent germination starting indoors in peat pellets, in about two days. They transplanted very well. Had to move several after planting to a new raised bed, and they continue to grow beautifully. Although it's too early to harvest time, I am very happy with these seeds. I wish all seeds/plants were this easy and low maintenance.
