Black Turtle Bean

Bush, 95 days. Splendid dark purple-black bean that is widely grown throughout Latin America, and known there by numerous common names. The compact bush plants are very productive and yield reliably even in the north! Flavor is rich and texture is meaty—try these in vegetarian chili or as frijoles refritos in burritos. Due to the coloration, this variety offers the bonus of a high anthocyanin content too! We offer a select northern hardy strain that has been grown for many years by the Doug Baty family of Dixon, Montana, but orginally collected in a village in Mexico.

What are the pros? high yield, tasty

What are the cons? having so many to shell

Review:

I grow these every year and of all the beans I grow (I usually do about 10 varieties) these have the most compact bush form (though still, they spread and want to be vines - just not as much as others) and they are the least likely to rot. High yields, tasty. Not too picky about too wet or too cold for germination and they even handled our wet fall last year without too much loss to the beans rotting and sprouting within the soggy pods.

First time growing shell beans and I wish I'd planted more. Very productive and low maintenance. Just watered when it was dry and let them grow. .

What are the pros? black - anthocyanin, early

What are the cons? nothing

Review:

Temperate zone, it was seeded at May 20th, germinated 82 days (at the same level with standard "Kreolka"), at the 8th of September it gave a yeld 38 g per plant. seed size is 0.36 g. Average number of fruits per plant - 29.5, there were 5-7 seeds in fruit. It boils at 60 minutes. This is the best Baker Creek black bean at these criteria.

What are the pros? Great germination

What are the cons? Not a bush bean!

Review:

I'm not sure why this is listed as a bush bean when it definitely is a climber! I garden in a very small area and everything has to have a very specific growth habit or it throws the whole plan off. So while I love the beans themselves, great flavor, I'm a little frustrated by the description of "bush". I highly recommend this bean for the flavor but plan for climbers. If it had been a true bush bean I would have given it a solid 5 stars.

Review:

Impressive bean. A bed of these survived being eaten down to only a few tiny new leaves and rebounded to produce a decent crop here in northern Michigan.
