Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Sweetie Pie blackberry is an heirloom thornless variety that grows best in full sun and well-draining soil. Blackberries can be grown from seed but are typically grown from propagated starts from a mother plant. Before planting, create raised beds or mounds to improve drainage and build a trellis or fence to support the trailing canes. Amend the soil with 3-6 inches of finished compost for nutrient-rich planting conditions. Water 1-2 inches per week, especially from midsummer through autumn.

When to Grow

Plant after the danger of frost has passed in early spring. This perennial variety will produce fruit in its second year and reaches full maturity in 2-3 years. Check your local area’s frost dates to plan planting. If you’re not sure how to do that, consult our blog post,Our Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources.’

How to Sow and Plant

Choose a location that has well-draining soil with a pH of 5.5 to 6.5. Prepare raised beds or mounds to improve drainage. Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root ball, spacing plants 3-5 feet apart in rows 6-8 feet apart. Plant at the same depth as in the nursery container, water thoroughly, and apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

How to Grow

Keep plants well-watered, providing 1-2 inches per week from midsummer through autumn to support fruit production. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced fertilizer (such as 10-10-10) and again after harvest to strengthen the plant for the next season. Prune back blackberries at the beginning of winter, leaving 3-4 of the strongest canes per plant for better fruiting the next season. Birds love blackberries, so netting may be required to protect the fruit. Mulching helps retain moisture and prevent weeds.

How to Save

  • Blackberries do not reproduce easily from seeds.

  • Take cuttings from leafy canes or suckers in late summer to early fall.

  • Cuttings should be 3-6 inches long.

  • Pot up in a peat/sand mix.

  • Water well and keep in a shady location.

  • Overwinter inside to plant next season.

  • Alternatively, you can use a tip rooting method to expand your current patch.
