How To Grow Fenugreek Seeds
Latin name Trigonella foenum-graecum is an annual member of the legume family. The seeds and leaves of fenugreek are a popular ingredient in Indian food. Grown as an annual in most zones and perennial from USDA zones 9-11.
HISTORY
Native to the Middle East. An ancient plant, the use of cultivated seeds dates back thousands of years. In ancient Greece, the seeds were used to flavor wine.
USES
- Fenugreek leaves and seeds have many culinary uses.
- Seeds will germinate in 3-5 days.
- Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep.
- Start indoors 3-4 weeks before last frost and transplant outdoors after last frost or direct sow after all chance of frost has passed and soil has reliably warmed to 60 F.
- Ideal germination temperature is 65-75 F.
- Prefers full sun to light afternoon shade.
- Provide average, well-drained soil.
- Frost sensitive.
- Space plants 4-6 inches apart.

- This plant has no serious pest or disease issues.
- Collect dried seed pods and dry for 7 days out of direct sunlight in a warm, dry area.
- Pick seeds from pods or thresh to free seeds.
- Seeds can be separated from the chaff by winnowing.
