Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Plant Chandler blueberries in well-draining, moist soil, rich in organic matter. Blueberries thrive in acidic soil with a pH of 4-5, so test your soil pH before planting. If needed, add sulfur to lower the pH. Keep plants well-watered, providing 1-2 inches per week, and mulch with sawdust or wood chips. Top-dress with compost and mulch annually to improve soil health and fertility. Cover with netting to protect berries from birds.

When to Grow

Plant Chandler blueberries after the last spring frost once the soil has warmed. If you’re unsure of your last frost date, consult our blog post ‘Our Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources.’ In colder zones, apply extra mulch around the base to protect roots from freezing temperatures.

How to Sow and Plant

Select a site with 6-8 hours of daily sunlight and well-draining, acidic soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and as deep as the container, and place the plant so that the base of the stem is at soil level. Space plants 2-3 feet apart in rows spaced 8-10 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mulch with 2-4 inches of pine bark, sawdust, or wood chips to preserve moisture and suppress weeds.

How to Grow

Keep plants well-watered, with 1-2 inches per week. Try irrigating with a soaker hose to keep roots moist while preventing fungal issues. Fertilize in early spring and again after fruiting with an acid-loving fertilizer. In the second year, prune bushes when the plants have gone dormant, after leaf drop. This usually happens in mid to late winter. Continue to prune each year to encourage healthy new growth.

How to Save

  • Blueberries can be propagated through softwood cutting in the spring or hardwood cuttings in the dormant season.

  • Take 4-6 inch long cuttings using sterilized pruning shears.

  • Dip the bottom end in a rooting hormone.

  • Plant into a pot with well-draining potting soil.

  • Keep moist but not wet until the cutting has rooted.
