Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Hedou Tiny is a micro variety of bok choy, ideal for small gardens, container gardening, or tight spaces. This variety thrives in well-drained, fertile soil, enriched with organic compost. Consistent moisture is key, so water regularly, but avoid waterlogged soil.

When to Grow

Hedou Tiny bok choy prefers temperatures between 60-80 F. For spring planting, start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost and transplant outdoors after the frost has passed. In fall, sow seeds directly in the garden in late summer when temperatures drop below 80 F. This variety isn’t frost hardy.

How to Sow and Plant

Directly sow Hedou Tiny seeds 1/4 inch deep in the soil. Space the plants about 3 inches apart. Because of their tiny size, this variety is also well suited for container gardening. To extend the harvest, sow new seeds every 3-4 weeks.

How to Grow

This variety of bok choy prefers full sun in cooler climates but benefits from afternoon shade in warmer areas to prevent bolting. Ensure the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. Bok choy is a heavy feeder, so consider adding a balanced organic fertilizer at planting time. Mulching can help retain soil moisture and regulate temperature.

How to Save

Bok choy is an annual, completing its life cycle in one year. To avoid selecting bolt-prone plants, don't save seeds from prematurely bolted ones. Let plants mature fully, harvest the dried pods, crumble the small round seeds into a jar or bag, then seal and store the seeds in a cool, dark, dry place. Bok choy cross-pollinates with other rapa species but not with different species of Brassica, so it's safe to grow it next to mustard greens (Brassica juncea), for example. To ensure seed purity, isolate your bok choy from other blooming B. rapa by about a half mile or use caging techniques. Allow your healthiest plants to flower for a strong, diverse seed pool.
