(Brassica oleracea). Rasmus is from the breeding program at Sativa Rheinau in Switzerland. An exquisite big, broad broccoli, we think this is one of the best open-pollinated varieties that consistently produces 7-inch, full-thick true heads, outshining many of the popular F1 types we grew alongside in our trials. We’ve never been happier with our broccoli harvests. These picture-perfect jolly green guys are an ideal crop for market gardeners as they reliably produce uniform heads. Plus a bumper bounty roughly a week after harvesting, when a surge of tender sprouting florets emerge from the central stem and keep on producing for an extended period. These sugary, tender stems are delicious tossed into plates of pasta, stir fries, and curries.

Growing Tips

Rasmus broccoli produces uniform, dense heads and thrives in fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture. For optimal results, rotate crops annually and avoid planting near other Brassicas to reduce pest pressure and soilborne disease buildup.

When to Grow

Start Rasmus broccoli seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before your last frost date, or direct sow in midsummer for a fall crop. This cool-season variety matures best in mild to cool temperatures. If you’re not sure how to find your first and last frost dates, consult our blog post 'Our Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources.'

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep in seed trays or directly in the garden. Transplant hardened-off seedlings when they have 4–6 true leaves, spacing them 12–18 inches apart in rows 24 inches apart.

How to Grow

Keep soil consistently moist and feed with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer every 3–4 weeks. Provide mulch to retain moisture and regulate temperature. Watch for cabbage worms and aphids—hand-pick or use organic insecticidal soap as needed.

How to Save

  • Broccoli is biennial—overwinter or replant mature plants for seed production.
  • Isolate by at least 1,000 feet from other Brassicas to maintain varietal purity.
  • Let flower stalks mature and dry fully on the plant.
  • Collect dry seed pods before they shatter naturally.
  • Store cleaned seeds in a cool, dry place for up to five years.

FAQ

Can Rasmus broccoli tolerate frost?
Yes, Rasmus broccoli is frost-hardy and actually benefits from cooler temperatures, which enhance flavor and head density. It’s an excellent candidate for fall harvests in most growing zones.

How big do Rasmus broccoli heads get?
Rasmus broccoli forms compact, dome-shaped heads about 6–8 inches in diameter, perfect for fresh eating or freezing. Secondary side shoots can be harvested after the main head is cut.

Can I grow Rasmus broccoli in containers?
Yes! Choose a large container (at least 3 gallons) with rich soil and good drainage. Provide 6–8 hours of sun daily and monitor water needs closely, especially during warm spells.
