Description

(Brassica oleracea). A very early, high-quality cabbage. The dense, solid heads are spherical, 5-7 inches in diameter and weigh 3-5 pounds. Plants are very compact relative to the size of the heads, allowing closer spacing than some varieties. Fine for coleslaw, stir-fries, and other fresh uses; not usually considered an excellent storage type. One of the earliest types we sell, and popular since at least the 1920s.

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Golden Acre cabbage grows best in cooler weather and is well-suited for small gardens due to its compact size. It prefers ample, even moisture, and requires full sun; however, it can also tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter climates.

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date for a spring harvest. For a fall crop, sow seeds in mid-summer, about 6-8 weeks before the first expected frost. Golden Acre cabbage is frost-tolerant, making it suitable for both early spring and late fall planting. It grows best in temperatures between 50-75 F but can tolerate light frost, which helps enhance its flavor.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow Golden Acre cabbage seeds 1/4 inch deep in seed trays filled with seed-starting mix. Keep the soil consistently moist and warm until the seeds germinate, typically within 7-12 days. Once seedlings have 2-3 true leaves, harden them off and transplant outdoors, spacing them 18-20. If direct sowing, plant seeds 1/4 inch deep in well-prepared soil, thinning seedlings to the desired spacing once they emerge.

How to Grow

Enrich the soil with compost or well-rotted manure to improve fertility. Water regularly, especially during head formation, to ensure solid, firm heads; provide about 1 inch of water per week. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer at planting and side-dress with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer every 3-4 weeks. Full sun is ideal, though some afternoon shade can help prevent bolting in hotter climates.

How to Save
  • If you plan to save seeds, isolate plants from other members of the cabbage species (kale, collards, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower) by up to one mile to avoid cross pollination.
  • Cabbage is biennial, blooming only after experiencing a winter's chill, and will require overwintering with heavy mulch and row cover in cool winter areas.
  • For those with very harsh winters, consider digging up and placing in a root cellar until hard frost has passed.
  • In the second season, when flowers have passed and seed pods have dried, dig up the plants and hang upside down to dry.
  • Dried pods can be placed in a sack and crushed to release seeds. Remove chaff and detritus.
  • Place seeds in a glass jar and refrigerate for up to 5 years.
FAQ

Can Golden Acre cabbage be grown in containers?
Yes, it is well-suited for container gardening due to its compact size. Use a pot at least 12 inches deep and wide, filled with nutrient-rich soil.

What are some common diseases that affect Golden Acre cabbage, and how can they be prevented?
Common diseases include clubroot, black rot, and downy mildew. Prevent these by practicing crop rotation, ensuring proper plant spacing for good air circulation, and using disease-resistant varieties.

How do I know when Golden Acre cabbage is ready to harvest?
Harvest when the heads are firm and have reached the desired size, typically 3-5 pounds. Cut the cabbage at the base with a sharp knife before the heads begin to split.
