Description

(Calendula officinalis). Calendula is incredibly versatile with boundless culinary, healing, pest-repelling and ornamental properties. We love this new twist on the traditional calendula; soft yellow-pink petals have a surprise cerise color on their backs. This dual color pattern gives the blooms a bold, three-dimensional effect. An excellent companion plant for tomatoes in the garden or containers! Another wonderful selection from plant breeder Frank Morton.

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Sow in place in fall or spring, or start plants indoors and grow for several weeks, setting out after last frost. These tall-ish (20-30 inches, typically) plants require full sun, rich soil, and moderate moisture. Will bloom all summer; cut often or deadhead spent blooms for more flowers. Easy to grow in containers, and very attractive to pollinators. Often self-sows.

When to Grow

Plant as soon as danger of frost is over, or start indoors 6-8 weeks earlier and transplant seeds into the ground after the last frost in your area. Strawberry Blonde calendula will keep flowering well into fall and will tolerate some cold. In warmer climates, it can be grown as a winter annual.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/4" deep, either directly into the ground or in seed trays. Will usually germinate in a week or two at soil temperatures around 65-70 F. Plant or thin to 10" apart to maintain good air circulation and reduce the risk of fungal diseases.

How to Grow

Strawberry Blonde calendula grows best in full sun but may tolerate partial shade in hotter weather.  Prefers well-draining, moderately fertile soil.  Water regularly to keep soil moist but not waterlogged. For bushier growth and more blooms, pinch off the growing tips when plants are about 10 inches tall.  Frequent cutting and/or deadheading spent flowers will promote continuous blooming throughout the growing season.

How to Save

Plants easily self-sow the following spring. If growing more than one variety of calendula, you will need to isolate by 1/4 mile from any other calendula varieties, or you can use caging techniques. Seeds are easy to save; the heads turn brown and seeds can easily be harvested in fall. Keep in a cool, dry, dark place until next spring.
