(Eschscholzia californica) Hardy annual. Often self-sows. Early. The brilliant orange, small poppy from parts of California. This easy-to-grow, spring bloomer makes a splash of color.

What are the pros? Easy of growth, color

What are the cons? flop over

Review:

I love these. I think they've re-seeded themselves for next year...at least I hope they did. They were easy to grow and beautiful. They were happiest in full sun, not so much in partial sun. When they weren't in the sun, the flowers would close. These were a mass of beautiful orange. They grew and grew and became a mass that overtook other smaller plants so i had to pull some of them out. They tend to fall over and then keep growing...so they really are a mass. They look great and the foliage is a beautiful silver green as others have mentioned.

Review:

My son threw in some seeds several years ago and saw only a few plants. This year I have a mass of orange.. we left Calif 50 years ago and never thought they would grow out here. They must like the Cape Cod weather as they are thriving. They have made this 89 year old transplant one happy lady. They are as beautiful as I remember.

What are the pros? Self Sows & Multiplies

What are the cons? plant maturity time length

Review:

These magnificent beauties are stunningly bright gold-orange and will grow from seed in very dry soil. Like most poppies, coming from very small seeds, it took me close to 6 months for the plant to mature into a large enough plant to begin producing flowers. However, wind and rain self sow the seeds and I ended up having a large section of my backyard covered in these beautiful plants. The foliage is a silver green...also beautiful.

Review:

I grew up with these since it is the California state flower. These poppies self sow, so as long as you aren't using herbicide or doing heavy weeding, you'll likely never buy seeds again. You can also harvest the seeds before the seed pods explode and shift the location where they grow for the next year. These come up in my yard year after year and I never have to buy seed and plant. The color is awesome, bees love them.
