Description

(Daucus carota). This delicious, lemon-yellow, classic French variety has crunchy roots, and is great for snacking. Or making lovely golden-yellow juice that tastes distinctly of orange juice -- rich, sweet, and flavorful. This golden beauty was introduced in 1946 in the Vilmorin-Andrieux catalog as an improvement in flavor compared to most yellow carrots. It was named after the Doubs River, which flows through the Jura Mountains of France and Switzerland. It is a robust carrot with a uniform yellow color, suitable for harvest in the fall. The shape is cylindrical with an obtuse end and is excellent for storage.

Growing Tips

To grow Jaune Obtuse du Doubs carrot successfully, plant in loose, well-drained soil that is free of stones to prevent root deformation. Ensure that the soil remains consistently moist, especially during the first few weeks of growth. Best in cooler weather.

When to Grow

This carrot variety is typically sown from late winter to mid-summer, depending on your region. In cooler climates, sowing can start as early as February. In warmer regions, it's better to wait until the soil has warmed up, but not too late to avoid the heat of summer. If you're growing in a frost-prone area, check local frost dates and aim to plant in spring or fall. These carrots take about 75 days to mature.

How to Sow and Plant

Direct sow the seeds into the ground at a depth of about 1/8 inch. Space the seeds 2-3 inches apart in rows 12-18 inches apart. Carrot seeds can be challenging to handle due to their small size, so using seed tape or mixing seeds with sand can help with even distribution. The soil should be light, fluffy, and free of rocks to avoid misshapen roots. Adding compost can help improve soil structure. Keep the soil evenly moist throughout the germination period (12-18 days). Use mulch to retain moisture and keep the soil cool.

How to Grow

Carrots require light and fluffy soil in full sun, and adequate moisture but only average fertilizing. Watch out for pests like carrot flies. Planting companions like onions, leeks, and chives can help deter these pests. Ensure the soil is well-drained to prevent diseases.

How to Save

Carrots are biennial plants, meaning they flower and produce seeds in their second year. To save seeds, leave a few plants in the ground over winter. In spring, they will flower and eventually produce seeds. Once the seed heads have dried, collect and store them in a cool, dry place. Note that carrots can cross-pollinate with wild carrots, so for pure seeds, ensure no wild relatives are nearby.
