Growing Tips

The Kuttiger carrot thrives in cooler climates and is well-suited for long-term storage. To grow this variety successfully, it's important to provide well-drained, sandy loam soil with a slightly acidic pH of 6.0-6.5. Ensuring full sun and regular watering will help maximize yield and flavor.

When to Grow

Plant Kuttiger carrots in early spring, 2-4 weeks before the last expected frost, when soil temperatures are around 50 F. In mild climates, you can also sow in late summer for a fall harvest. This carrot takes about 70 days to mature, so plan accordingly to avoid the hottest parts of summer or early frost in the fall.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds about 1/8 inch deep and 1 inch apart in rows spaced 12 inches apart. Carrot seeds can be challenging to handle due to their small size, so using seed tape or mixing seeds with sand can help with even distribution. Thin the seedlings to 2-3 inches apart once they reach a few inches tall. Prior to sowing, ensure the soil is loose and free of stones, which can cause the roots to fork. Consider adding compost or a low-nitrogen fertilizer to enrich the soil without encouraging excessive leaf growth. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination, which can take up to three weeks.

How to Grow

Full sun is ideal, providing at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. Water regularly, ensuring about 1 inch of water per week. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. Apply a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer 5-6 weeks after planting to promote healthy root development.

How to Save

Carrots are biennials, meaning they flower in their second year. To save seeds from Kuttiger carrots, leave some plants in the ground over winter. In the second year, they will produce flowers and seed heads. Once the seeds are mature and dry, collect and store them in a cool, dry place for planting the following season.
