Description

(Daucus carota). The best-tasting orange carrot we have tried, New Kuroda is sugary sweet, and the texture is ultra-fine-grained. An improvement on the famous Japanese Kuroda type carrot, the roots have a blunt tip and vibrant orange color. This refined root will please even the most discerning palates, but don’t let the silky soft texture fool you—this is a hardy breed. The roots can power through tough soil and blistering heat, producing winning roots under even the most brutal conditions. This Japanese heirloom was bred to withstand tropical heat and therefore is the top spring- or summer-grown variety that we have seen.

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

New Kuroda carrots thrive in loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. It's important to prepare your garden bed by removing rocks, debris, and weeds, and loosening the soil to a depth of at least 8-12 inches. This allows the carrots to develop their long roots without obstruction. Regular watering is crucial, as consistent moisture is needed for the roots to grow straight and avoid cracking.

When to Grow

New Kuroda carrots are best planted in the early spring or late summer. They prefer cool weather, making them ideal for spring planting as soon as the soil can be worked, or in late summer for a fall crop. In warm climates, they can also be planted in the fall for a winter harvest. The seeds typically take 70-80 days to mature.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow New Kuroda carrot seeds directly into the garden about 1/8 inch deep, spaced 1-2 inches apart in rows that are 12 inches apart. Carrot seeds can be challenging to handle due to their small size, so using seed tape or mixing seeds with sand can help with even distribution. The soil should be kept moist, but not waterlogged, during the germination period, which takes about 12-18 days. Thin the seedlings to about 2-3 inches apart once they are a few inches tall to give each carrot enough space to grow.

How to Grow

Ensure the carrot bed is weed-free, and water the plants consistently, aiming for deep watering sessions rather than frequent light watering. Mulching around the plants can help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Thinning the plants is essential to avoid overcrowding, which can lead to stunted growth and misshapen carrots. If pests like carrot flies are a concern, consider using row covers to protect the crops.

How to Save

New Kuroda carrots are biennials, meaning they produce seeds in their second year. To save seeds, allow some of the healthiest plants to overwinter in the ground. In their second year, they will produce flowers, followed by seeds. Once the seeds have matured and dried on the plant, they can be harvested and stored in a cool, dry place.

FAQ

Can New Kuroda carrots be grown in containers?
Yes, but the container must be at least 12 inches deep to accommodate their root growth.

How do I know when New Kuroda carrots are ready to harvest?
It typically takes about 70-80 days for this variety to mature. They are ready when their tops are about 1 inch in diameter. Gently pull them out of the ground.

How should I store harvested New Kuroda carrots?
Store them in a cool, humid place or refrigerate them after cutting off the tops. They can last several months if stored properly.
