What are the pros? Attractive, tasty, easy
What are the cons? Hard to tell when ripe
We tried these for the first time this year. They grow a lot like tomatoes. The berries turn black starting around mid July here in colorado, but they taste like tomatoes with a pungent foreign aftertaste. We learned to wait until the little stems attached to the berry also turn purple, also the juice will be more purple (opposed to green), at which time the berries are sweet and lose the weird after taste. They berries keep on the plant for weeks so no rush to harvest. It's mid August now, I'm thinking of making a pie and freezing some berries for later, but there is still half berries green.
The plant itself is attractive, I have these growing in my perennial bed and even used some unripe and ripe berry stems in floral arrangements (no for eating obviously) for a little fun detail.
They have tolerated being neglected and underwatered
