Chinese Cabbage Seeds, Kyoto #3
Description
(Brassica rapa pekinensis). Chunky barrel-shaped heads, packed tightly with layers of sweet mildly flavored leaves that are extra crisp and decadently crunchy. This heavyweight Japanese heirloom is capable of weighing in at 7 pounds when fully mature and is listed among the prestigious group of Dento Yasai, (traditional cultural vegetables of Japan). It loves cooler weather and stores well after harvest. We love using the big, broad outer leaves for braised, stuffed cabbage rolls. Delicious!

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs
Growing Tips
Kyoto #3 Chinese cabbage prefers cool weather and fertile, well-drained soil. Plant in beds rich in organic matter and avoid high heat, which causes bolting. Regular watering and early thinning are key to full, dense heads.
When to Grow
Sow seeds in early spring or late summer for a fall crop. Avoid midsummer heat to prevent premature bolting. Fall plantings often yield better results in most climates. If you’re not sure how to find your first and last frost dates, consult our blog post 'Our Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources.'
How to Sow and Plant
Sow seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep in rows spaced 18–24 inches apart. Once seedlings emerge, thin to 12-18 inches apart for proper head formation. Direct seeding is recommended, but transplants work well too.
How to Grow
Keep soil moist and weed-free. Mulch around plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize with compost or a balanced organic fertilizer. Watch for flea beetles and cabbage worms—use floating row covers if needed.
How to Save
- Kyoto #3 is a biennial—allow select plants to overwinter or replant the next spring.
- Isolate from other Brassica rapa varieties by 1/2 mile to maintain seed purity.
- Let flower stalks fully develop and dry on the plant.
- Harvest pods once they are dry and shatter-prone.
- Clean and store seeds in a cool, dry, dark location.
FAQ
Is Kyoto #3 Chinese cabbage heat tolerant?
No, this variety prefers cool weather and will bolt quickly in hot temperatures. For best results, grow in early spring or fall to avoid heat stress.
Can I harvest Kyoto #3 leaves early?
Yes, you can harvest outer leaves as the plant grows, but for full-sized heads, wait until the cabbage reaches maturity—typically in 60–70 days.
How do I prevent pests in Kyoto #3 cabbage?
Use floating row covers to block flea beetles and cabbage worms. Rotate crops and apply neem oil or insecticidal soap as needed to control infestations.
