(Allium tuberosum) These winter-tolerant chives are great for greenhouse production. They have great garlic flavor and are popular with Asian chefs. We love ‘em.

What are the pros? flavor

What are the cons? none yet

Review:

Wow. In our southeast corner of the country, these are perfect for garlic/onion flavor midsummer! I tried growing them last fall through the winter and it was a flop but they took off in our heat this year (started mid May). Full sun. I never watered the planters with these chives and the rains did the rest. It was a rainy season though. Will always have these on hand as they were popular in the market garden.

What are the pros? all

What are the cons? didn't see flowers

Review:

Grew easily by scattering seed outdoors. Prolific. Overwintered in zone 5b and now look just like the photo. Pretty, but I don't think I saw any flowers. They are definitely multiplying in any case.

What are the pros? easy to grow, beloved by bees

What are the cons? can be somewhat invasive

Review:

Grows in desert dirt with a little water and shade. After sowing in pots and blooming, it has self sewn in every nearby pot and established itself in clumps in ground. Buds are great stir fired with bean sprouts.

What are the pros? Easy to grow, very hardy

What are the cons? Nothing

Review:

I'm in zone 2A, Canada. Package say they may not be hardy below zone 5 but mine survived just fine here. I grew them from seed last year in a container. When winter arrived I sunk the container in the ground and mulched with dead leaves. They reappeared in spring and grew just fine. From the other reviews my guess would be that they prefer a colder climate.

What are the pros? Nothing

What are the cons? Simply don't grow well

Review:

These would not grow past spindly stalks. We've tried them numerous times in a small deck box and they were no bigger than a needle and once they grew to about 3 inches, they simply died off. We used brand new organic potting soil and tried watering a lot, not watering at all and everything in between.
