Description

(Zea mays) Sweet Corn. This multicolored sweet corn may be the most beautiful corn in the galaxy! This nutrient-dense strain was selected in the Great Basin of Utah by Joseph Lofthouse, from the original landrace created by Alan Bishop at his farm in southern Indiana. Bishop crossed several sweet corn cultivars and mass-selected for color and flavor. Old-fashioned sweet corn flavor and a mix of vivid colors give this variety a burst of complex flavors and antioxidants on ears that will develop an amazing display of colors early at the milk stage.

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Astronomy Domine corn thrives in full sun with moderate watering. It is a robust and easy-to-grow variety, adapted to diverse conditions. Ensure soil temperatures are above 65 F for proper germination. This corn variety is half-hardy, so it needs protection from cold weather. It's recommended to plant in blocks rather than single rows to enhance pollination and ensure well-filled ears.

When to Grow

Plant Astronomy Domine corn when soil temperatures reach about 60 degrees F, after all danger of frost is past, typically in late spring to early summer. Succession planting every 2-3 weeks can extend the harvest period. For specific frost dates in your region, consult a local agricultural extension service or a gardening website that provides this information based on your USDA hardiness zone.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds about 1-2 inches deep and space them 6-12 inches apart in rows that are 36 inches apart. Thinning to 12 inches apart will help ensure each plant has enough space to thrive. This variety is wind-pollinated, so planting in blocks of at least five rows will improve pollination rates. Avoid planting too early as cool soil can cause seeds to rot due to their high sugar content. Sprouts form in 7-10 days after planting.

How to Grow

Astronomy Domine corn reaches maturity in about 65-70 days. It is tolerant of cold spring soils and is selected for its resilience in challenging growing conditions. Regular watering and maintaining a weed-free environment will support healthy growth. Consider using organic mulches to retain soil moisture and regulate temperature. Ensure 6-12 hours of sun daily.

How to Save

  • Corn is wind pollinated and will easily cross with other varieties (including GMO corn!). You will need at least 1 mile of isolation to avoid cross pollination. You can also use staggered timing or caging techniques.
  • Hand pick ears when fully dried on stalk. Seeds keep best if left on the ear; just remove at planting time.
  • Sweet corn seeds will remain viable for 2 years; dent corn will last up to 5 years when properly stored.
