(Cucumis sativus). Here’s a gorgeous all-purpose slicing/pickling type. The plants are of bush habit, usually running no more than 18 inches or so, making them superior for small gardens, containers, or anywhere space is tight. Fruit holds well on the plants, avoiding the need for constant picking. Plants are also tolerant to downy mildew, which is so often a problem in humid summer climates. The bumpy, brightly striped exterior is particularly attractive as well. A superb new Polish variety!

Growing Tips

Dar cucumbers are compact, bush-type plants that produce smooth, straight fruits with excellent flavor and texture. Perfect for small gardens and containers, this variety is ideal for fresh eating and short-season growers. With minimal spines and tender skin, they don’t require peeling. Trellising is optional but helpful for airflow and ease of harvest. Some afternoon shade is beneficial in the hottest summer weather.

When to Grow

Sow Dar cucumber seeds directly outdoors after your last frost date, once soil temperatures are above 70°F. In northern climates, start seeds indoors 3–4 weeks before transplanting. Dar cucumbers prefer warm, sunny growing conditions and are well-suited for raised beds, row gardens, or patio containers. How to Sow and Plant

Prepare fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost or aged manure. Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep, spaced 12 to 18 inches apart in rows or mounds. Water gently and maintain even moisture during germination. While the compact growth habit doesn’t require support, a small trellis or cage can keep plants tidy and improve yield.

How to Grow

Water consistently at the base to avoid foliar diseases, keeping soil evenly moist throughout the growing season. Feed with a balanced organic fertilizer every 2–3 weeks. Harvest fruits when they reach 4–6 inches long for the best flavor and to encourage ongoing production. Remove overripe fruits to prevent plant exhaustion.

How to Save

  • Select disease-free plants for seed saving.
  • Allow fruits to fully ripen on the vine (they will turn yellow or orange).
  • Scoop out seeds and pulp into a jar or bowl with water.
  • Ferment at room temperature for 2–3 days, stirring daily.
  • Rinse seeds thoroughly and dry on a screen or paper towel for 1–2 weeks.
  • Store in a cool, dry place in a labeled and dated airtight container.

FAQ

Are Dar cucumbers suitable for container gardening?
Yes, their compact, bush-like growth makes them perfect for containers or small raised beds. Choose a pot with good drainage and provide a small cage or stake if needed.

How often should I harvest Dar cucumbers?
Harvest every couple of days once fruit begins forming. Picking regularly at 4–6 inches encourages higher yields and prevents cucumbers from becoming overly mature or seedy.

Are Dar cucumbers good for pickling?
Although primarily grown for fresh eating, Dar cucumbers can be pickled when harvested young. Their firm texture and tender skin make them well-suited for refrigerator pickles or small-batch canning.
