(Cucumis sativus). Super sweet fruit is crisp, like an apple! A unique heirloom from Australia, where it is still popular. The fruit is the size of a lemon but has a beautiful lime green color. These are excellent for eating: very mild, sweet, and juicy. Hard to find and really fun to grow. Excellent flavor! This is an annual favorite at the Baker Creek farm and is truly bitter free. We eat these green globes skin and all.

Growing Tips

Richmond Green Apple cucumbers grow vigorously and produce unique round fruits that resemble apples in shape and size. Their crisp, juicy flesh and thin, tender skin make them perfect for salads, snacking, and light pickling. Trellising helps maximize space and keeps fruits clean. Harvest regularly to encourage continued production and best flavor development. Some afternoon shade is beneficial in the hottest summer weather.

When to Grow

Sow Richmond Green Apple cucumber seeds outdoors once the danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures are consistently above 70°F. In cooler climates, start seeds indoors 3–4 weeks before your last frost and transplant after hardening off. This variety thrives in full sun and rich, well-drained soil. If you’re not sure how to find your first and last frost dates, consult our blog post 'Our Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources.'

How to Sow and Plant

Choose a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil. Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep and space them 12 to 18 inches apart in rows or mounds. Add compost or organic matter to enrich soil. Install a trellis at planting time to support sprawling vines and ensure the round fruits stay clean and blemish-free.

How to Grow

Water consistently at the base, keeping soil evenly moist without soaking. Apply mulch to retain moisture and prevent weeds. Fertilize with an organic, balanced fertilizer every 2–3 weeks. Train vines vertically on a trellis for improved air circulation and easier harvesting. Pick fruits at 3–4 inches in diameter for best flavor and texture.

How to Save

  • Select disease-free plants for seed saving.
  • Allow fruits to fully ripen on the vine (they will turn yellow or orange).
  • Scoop out seeds and pulp into a jar or bowl with water.
  • Ferment at room temperature for 2–3 days, stirring daily.
  • Rinse seeds thoroughly and dry on a screen or paper towel for 1–2 weeks.
  • Store in a cool, dry place in a labeled and dated airtight container.
