(Cucumis sativus). Long, ribbed, dark green fruit can grow to 18 inches. They are very mild, sweet, and burpless. One of our personal favorites for fresh eating. This productive heirloom comes from northern China and is very attractive. A parthenocarpic variety, you can grow it in a greenhouse without pollinators, and vines will produce masses of burpless fruits that have few seeds, making them more tender and crisp!

Growing Tips

Suyo Long cucumbers are vigorous climbers that thrive in hot weather and produce long, ribbed fruits with a sweet, non-bitter flavor. Excellent for fresh eating, stir-fry, or pickling, these cucumbers grow best when trellised to encourage straighter growth. Their thin skin requires no peeling, and regular harvesting promotes continuous yields through the season. Some afternoon shade is beneficial in the hottest summer weather.

When to Grow

Direct sow Suyo Long cucumber seeds outdoors after your last frost, when soil temperatures reach at least 70°F. In cooler zones, start seeds indoors 3–4 weeks before the frost-free date and transplant when the weather warms. Choose a sunny location with rich soil to maximize yield and flavor. If you’re not sure how to find your first and last frost dates, consult our blog post 'Our Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources.'

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep in fertile, well-drained soil. Space plants 12 to 18 inches apart in rows or mounds. Amend soil with compost or aged manure before planting. Install a trellis or vertical support structure at planting time to keep vines off the ground and improve fruit shape, airflow, and harvesting ease.

How to Grow

Water consistently at the base of plants, maintaining even soil moisture. Apply mulch to suppress weeds and retain moisture. Fertilize every 2–3 weeks with an organic, balanced fertilizer. Train vines to climb supports to promote straighter fruits. Harvest cucumbers when they are 12–15 inches long and still tender for peak flavor and texture.

How to Save

  • Select disease-free plants for seed saving.
  • Allow fruits to fully ripen on the vine (they will turn yellow).
  • Scoop out seeds and pulp into a jar or bowl with water.
  • Ferment at room temperature for 2–3 days, stirring daily.
  • Rinse seeds thoroughly and dry on a screen or paper towel for 1–2 weeks.
  • Store in a cool, dry place in a labeled and dated airtight container.

FAQ

Do Suyo Long cucumbers have to be grown vertically?
Vertical growth is highly recommended. While they can sprawl on the ground, trellising improves air circulation, reduces disease, and helps the long fruits develop straighter and cleaner.

Are Suyo Long cucumbers bitter like some heirlooms?
No, Suyo Long cucumbers are known for their sweet, mild flavor and lack of bitterness, even in hot weather. Their thin skin and tender flesh are ideal for fresh eating without peeling.

Can Suyo Long cucumbers grow in containers?
Yes, they can be grown in large containers at least 12 inches deep. Provide a sturdy trellis or cage to support their vigorous vines and ensure full sun and consistent watering.
