What are the pros? Best tasting tomato this year

What are the cons? Not many fruit

Review:

What I really love about this tomato is that it is much shorter than all my other tomatoes. All the rest have grown way over their cages and require staking which I do with bamboo but never am able to keep up with and as result have many plants folding over on themselves. This bush is incredibly bushy and only about 4 feet tall... every other variety is at least 6-8 feet tall. They exceeded all my expectations in the taste department. My husband and I agree they are better than the Cherokee purple and the large barred boar which usually are our favorite tasting. They were prone to some deep cracking but this year was a hot drought followed by a torrential week long rain. The cracks did not leak and go bad like the Cherokee purple though. I will be growing again next year while other tomatoes are getting the ax (yellow pear and German lunchbox, the atomic grapes are replacing the German lunchbox).

What are the pros? Flavor, size, plant health

What are the cons? length of time to maturity

Review:

We grew these lovely tomatoes for the past two years, and we're now certain - we will ALWAYS grow these tomatoes as our slicers from now on. The flavor is rich and tangy, without as much acidity as some of the redder and darker varieties. The meat of the tomato compared to the seed portion is good, and the skin is a nice thickness that keeps them from bruising easily, but also not so thick that slicing becomes difficult. I haven't tried these in jam or sauce yet, but we've used them in grilled cheese and home made pizza with equally pleasing results - if anything, the flavor is made even more rich with the heat of cooking. This year we've also had some issues with early blight in our garden. Although several other varieties we were growing have succumbed to the fungus, our Dad's Sunset are still in good health, despite being only one row away from several infected plants. Overall, these tomatoes are healthy and tasty, and well worth the wait of the plant to mature!

What are the pros? Quality, taste & texture

What are the cons? Should have grown more plants

Review:

Great germination (thanks Baker Creek) & strong plants. Fruit set was late but they caught up fast. Very large fruit (consistent baseball size). Gorgeous colour (produced stunning orange sauces & soups), slices beautifully, silky texture & juicy too. This is one for the 'plant every year' collection.

What are the pros? Vibrant color & flavor

What are the cons? the critters liked them too

Review:

Dad's sunset tomato are the best tomato I've ever had, hands down. The size of a baseball, and extremely uniform, these bright orange lovelies have a tender skin, and outstanding flavor and texture. Sweet, juicy, and with a fine texture, these are without compare. I'm particular about tomato skins and these were thin and tender, not tough at all. They did the best of all my tomatoes (others were the Money Maker, Brandywine, and Green Zebra). I will absolutely be growing these again next year, but hopefully with a few more protections against the critters who apparently seemed to find them as tasty as we did.

What are the pros? Great yield

What are the cons? none

Review:

I suggest caging these, rather than staking them. I was rather surprised at the yield, it seemed they were slow to start. Best producer of my garden! Large round maters. Prolific. Great slicers. Meaty. I have frozen several jars of them, we will see how that turns out. But I will definitely be including them next year!
