What are the pros? extremely hardy, good taste
What are the cons? cracking, uneven ripening
Dester was a late starter but is still alive and producing fruit in January! It didn't like our intense hot summer(first flowers unfortunately opened during a month of 95-113F temps). The plant stayed about 2 feet tall through summer with no fruit but suddenly, as the weather cooled, it grew giant. Loaded with mostly large fruits, some over a pound. Several clusters and one cluster of 4 very large fruit. Extreme cracking due to rain and hot/cold day/night temp shift. First fruit was average but the rest have been rich and flavorful. Green shoulders. Long time from first blush to fully ripe and pink. Mild meat but the seed gels are intensely flavored. Not sweet as others reported, but maybe because ours ripened starting in December. As we speak, there are several very slow maturing fruit on the vines. I packed the plant in straw and it survived 2 mild frosts so far. Here's hoping it can survive til next summer. Incredibly hardy. No disease. I'll definitely grow Dester again.
