What are the pros? zero pest or disease problems
What are the cons? none
So much fun and so easy. Planted two plants, beautiful and had no pests or mildew or anything. I fed them lightly a couple times (5-5-5) and just gave them lots of water and a trellis. They ran out of room on the trellis and I threw a ball of twine from the trellis to the trees to give them a line up, which they immediately climbed. They covered the treetops and now I don't know how I'm getting the loofahs down but it's pretty great seeing them hanging through the leaves under the canopy. They are the neighborhood's favorite vegetable in the garden this year--agree you should peel when yellow/turning brown, when you can press the skin and it crinkle-pops back. Skin basically falls off the bone. I planted directly in late May in 10a and harvested a few in August/September, and now they're doing a second round with many more loofahs that are still green, but slowly dehydrating now in December. I lost one to a thief, I think because they look so fun and odd. Huge fan!
