Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Edgar’s Baby dragon fruit grows best in full sun. In climates with extreme heat, opt for partial sun to prevent scorching. Use a trellis, arbor, or support pole as this is a climbing plant. Dragon fruit prefers well-draining, sandy or loamy soil with a pH between 6.0-7.0. Water deeply but infrequently, letting the soil dry slightly between waterings. Fertilize bi-monthly with a low-nitrogen fertilizer during the growing season but avoid fertilizing when the plant is dormant.

When to Grow

Plant after the last frost, when temperatures consistently stay above 50 F. Dragon fruit thrives in warm temperatures between 65-80 F and is hardy in zones 10-11. In cooler climates, grow in a large pot (20+ gallons recommended), in a greenhouse or in a sunroom. How to Sow and Plant

Choose a full-sun location with well-draining soil. If planting in a pot, use a 20+ gallon container with good drainage holes. Dig a hole deep enough to plant so that the soil line is the same as when plant is recieved; then place the plant in, and gently backfill with soil. Space plants 6 feet apart or more for proper growth. Provide a sturdy trellis or pole to support the climbing stems. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain consistent moisture, but do not overwater.

How to Grow

Water about once a week, letting the soil dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in fall and winter when the plant is dormant. Fertilize bi-monthly with a low-nitrogen fertilizer, but stop fertilizing in dormancy. In fall, prune away dead or decaying growth and trim for better airflow. When flowers open, hand-pollinate to increase fruit production. Protect young plants from intense heat or cold. Container-grown plants may take longer to fruit but can be moved indoors as needed.

How to Save
