Originally collected in Edirne (Adrianople), Turkey, in 1948, and stored by the USDA ever since, until we grew it out in 2008! Gorgeous 6-8 inch fruit is richly striped in purple and off-white. May be even superior to Listada de Gandia in appearance due to its deeper luster, and we actually preferred it in our trials! Vigorous plants, very productive.

What are the pros? Sturdy plant

What are the cons? Cucumber beetles love leaves

Review:

These were my first time growing eggplants, and I was very pleased with the results. Because it was my first time, I think I let them get a little too big though, and the quality may have suffered. They were very easy to grow, but we had a problem with cucumber beetles in our garden this year. The leaves took a beating, but they pulled through and fruited just fine. I grew two plants, and I thought it was strange that one plant had eggplants that had a green "background" color instead of white. My two plants yielded at least 20 eggplants through the season! TIP: Make sure you wear gloves while harvesting, because they have thick spines on the fruit stems and you WILL get stabbed.

What are the pros? long productive season

What are the cons? some green tinted bitter fruit

Review:

I have been growing eggplant of many varieties for several years. These sprouted faster, seedling survival rate was good and plant growth robust once seedlings were planted out. It took awhile, but once these beauties got going they were quite prolific and continues producing fruit into late November! I finally pulled the plants in December as the newly set fruits (yes, setting fruit in December!) failed to develop with the cold night temperatures. The only drawback is that about 15% of the fruits develop with a green-tinged skin and these tend to have a somewhat bitter flavor.

What are the pros? Rich flavor, robust plant

What are the cons? None

Review:

This is an eggplant I will be growing again. It endured a prolonged drip system partial failure (i.e. drought conditions) yet stayed alive and even productive. The flavor is undoubtedly rich and nutty. This not a bland eggplant, but in my view makes for wonderful dishes, either alone or as an addition to other varieties. I would not be concerned about bitterness: if any, it can be dealt with through salting or boiling. This is an eggplant with personality that deserves a place in your garden and kitchen.

What are the pros? Beautiful, healthy, productive

What are the cons? Bitter taste not for us

Review:

This eggplant has everything for us in Houston, except the taste. We ended up throwing most of them away and eating our Lousiana Greens, Millionaires and Pingtungs that grew in the same location instead. Will not grow again.

What are the pros? Nice fruit, tastes good

What are the cons? Terrible yield, poor plants

Review:

I had 15-20 seeds germinate, I transplanted 5 plants. Only 1 plant grew and did well-the others did grow, but did very poorly. The one plant that produced, only had 2 fruits all summer. I have always had excellent luck with eggplant, but not this year with this kind. Will NOT plant again.
