Originally collected in Edirne (Adrianople), Turkey, in 1948, and stored by the USDA ever since, until we grew it out in 2008! Gorgeous 6-8 inch fruit is richly striped in purple and off-white. May be even superior to Listada de Gandia in appearance due to its deeper luster, and we actually preferred it in our trials! Vigorous plants, very productive.

What are the pros? Rich flavor, robust plant

What are the cons? None

Review:

This is an eggplant I will be growing again. It endured a prolonged drip system partial failure (i.e. drought conditions) yet stayed alive and even productive. The flavor is undoubtedly rich and nutty. This not a bland eggplant, but in my view makes for wonderful dishes, either alone or as an addition to other varieties. I would not be concerned about bitterness: if any, it can be dealt with through salting or boiling. This is an eggplant with personality that deserves a place in your garden and kitchen.

What are the pros? Beautiful, healthy, productive

What are the cons? Bitter taste not for us

Review:

This eggplant has everything for us in Houston, except the taste. We ended up throwing most of them away and eating our Lousiana Greens, Millionaires and Pingtungs that grew in the same location instead. Will not grow again.

What are the pros? Nice fruit, tastes good

What are the cons? Terrible yield, poor plants

Review:

I had 15-20 seeds germinate, I transplanted 5 plants. Only 1 plant grew and did well-the others did grow, but did very poorly. The one plant that produced, only had 2 fruits all summer. I have always had excellent luck with eggplant, but not this year with this kind. Will NOT plant again.

What are the pros? finally producing

What are the cons? took a while

Review:

we are semi-desert and none of the other eggplant produced well. these took a while - probably due to our 100 degree weather during the summer - but are finally kicking out delicious fruit!

What are the pros? prolific and easy to grow

What are the cons? thorns and bitter

Review:

I prefer the mild taste of the Asian varieties such as Ping Tung or Fengyuan. This one is more bitter than expected. Grows very well and not too many pests. Flea beetles attacked leaves this year but not enough to do any real damage. I had excellent yield even in pots. This one continues to produce many batches of beautiful striped eggplants but I do fertilize regularily since tomatoes and eggplants are heavy feeders.
