Description

(Solanum macrocarpon). A cousin of the eggplant but with densely nutritious edible leaves, this variety hails originally from West Africa. Like any other eggplant, this tropical perennial can also be grown as an annual, reaching 2-4 feet tall and about as wide. A gorgeous edible ornamental, the small leaves and stems, as well as flowers, are edible when cooked (best blanched and then sautéed) in a fashion similar to collard greens. It is a popular green throughout West, Central and East Africa and in Vietnam as well. The importance of bitter greens in the diet has been well studied, and this heat- and drought-tolerant green is a perfect staple green for anyone looking for a boost of healthful bitter greens. A top-notch tropical permaculture plant! Featured in William Woys Weaver’s book 100 Vegetables and Where They Came From.

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

This heirloom eggplant is highly adaptable to heat and humidity, making it an excellent choice for tropical and subtropical climates. Grow it in full sun and nutrient-rich, well-draining soil. Regular harvesting of the leaves and fruits will encourage continuous growth and productivity.

When to Grow

Plant seeds in warm weather when soil temperatures reach at least 65 F. For best results, start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost date in your area and transplant them outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. Gboma eggplant thrives in USDA zones 8-11 and performs well in hot, humid conditions. How to Sow and Plant

Start seeds indoors in seed trays or pots filled with a high-quality seed-starting mix. Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and keep the soil consistently moist. Place the trays in a warm location or on a heat mat, as eggplant seeds require temperatures between 75-85 F to germinate. Once seedlings have at least two sets of true leaves and outdoor temperatures are warm, harden them off and transplant them into the garden. Space plants about 18 inches apart.

How to Grow

Water consistently, especially during flowering and fruit production. Mulch around the plants to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Provide full sun and nutrient-rich soil that is amended with compost or well-rotted manure. Fertilize regularly with a balanced fertilizer to promote healthy growth and fruiting. Prune lower leaves to improve air circulation and reduce the risk of disease. Monitor for pests like aphids and flea beetles.

How to Save

  • Eggplants are not insect-pollinated, so it is not necessary to isolate the plants very much to ensure pure seed. For home gardeners, an isolation distance of at least 40 feet is sufficient for seed saving.
  • Allow fruit to become overripe; the fruit will become slightly wrinkled and soft.
  • Scoop seeds out, rinse, and spread out to dry thoroughly.
  • Properly stored eggplant seeds will remain viable for up to 4 years.
