Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Listada de Gandia is a gorgeous heirloom eggplant that thrives in warm, sunny conditions and prefers well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. Regular watering is crucial to avoid bitterness, and mulching helps retain moisture while keeping weeds at bay.

When to Grow

This warm-season crop should be planted after the danger of frost has passed. Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before your region's last frost date, and wait until soil temperatures are above 65 F to transplant outdoors. If you are not sure how to find your local frost dates, check out our blog post ‘Our Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources.’

How to Sow and Plant

Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before the last frost date. Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix, maintaining a temperature of 75–85 F. Transplant seedlings when they have two sets of true leaves, spacing plants 18 inches apart. Harden off seedlings for a week before planting outdoors in full sun and fertile soil.

How to Grow

Use well-drained soil enriched with compost or manure, keeping the pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Water deeply and consistently, about 1–2 inches per week, to keep soil evenly moist. Fertilize at planting and mid-season using a balanced fertilizer. Mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, and stake plants to prevent branches from breaking under the weight of the fruit. Monitor for pests like flea beetles and aphids, treating as necessary.

How to Save

  • Eggplants are not insect-pollinated, so it is not necessary to isolate the plants very much to ensure pure seed. For home gardeners, an isolation distance of at least 40 feet is sufficient for seed saving.
  • Allow fruit to become overripe; the fruit will become slightly wrinkled and soft.
  • Scoop seeds out, rinse, and spread out to dry thoroughly.
  • Properly stored eggplant seeds will remain viable for up to 4 years.

Can I eat the skin of Listada de Gandia eggplants?
Yes, the skin of this variety is tender and edible. There's no need to peel it unless desired.
