Description

(Solanum aethiopicum). A truly scrumptious and unique member of the eggplant family, it tastes like a combination of eggplant, tomatoes, and peppers. It is traditionally made into gourmet caponata or preserved and pickled. This red round fruit is popular in the Italian province of Potenza. The bright orange, round fruit was originally brought to Rotonda, Italy, from Ethiopia just before World War II and can often be found in jars of olive oil and spread on crusty Italian bread. Jere Gettle found seeds for this delicacy while traveling in Italy in 2009.

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

This heat-loving Italian heirloom eggplant thrives in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Keep the plants well-watered but not soaked, and mulch around them to suppress weeds and retain moisture.

When to Grow

This warm-season crop is best grown when temperatures consistently stay above 55 F. Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before your area's last frost date, and transplant seedlings outdoors after the soil has warmed to at least 65 F and all risk of frost has passed. How to Sow and Plant

Start seeds indoors by planting them 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix, maintaining a soil temperature of 75–85 F. Use a heat mat to keep the soil warm if necessary. Once seedlings develop two sets of true leaves, transplant them into larger pots to encourage strong root systems. Harden off the plants for 7–10 days before transplanting them outdoors, spacing them 18 inches apart.

How to Grow

Melanzana Rossa di Rotonda grows best in soil enriched with compost or aged manure. Water deeply and consistently to keep the soil evenly moist. Fertilize at planting and again during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer. Mulch around the base of the plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Keep an eye out for pests like flea beetles and aphids, treating infestations promptly with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

How to Save

  • Eggplants are not insect-pollinated, so it is not necessary to isolate the plants very much to ensure pure seed. For home gardeners, an isolation distance of at least 40 feet is sufficient for seed saving.
  • Allow fruit to become overripe; the fruit will become slightly wrinkled and soft.
  • Scoop seeds out, rinse, and spread out to dry thoroughly.
  • Properly stored eggplant seeds will remain viable for up to 4 years.
