What are the pros? Scent, flavor, ease of growing

What are the cons? NOTHING!

Review:

I've been growing this for years, but am now giving a review. This has a lovely, spicy, basil flavor that is great for Italian dishes. It's a bit punchy on its own for pesto, but 1/3 of this with 2/3 milder sweet basil makes great pesto. It's easy to grow, keeps its flavor nicely for many months when frozen in olive oil (a zip lock bag, toss in leaves, coat with oil, then freeze). I've never dried it, but will try that this year, too. Doesn't require much care, loves the warmer temps of summer, and doesn't require much water. Watch out for Japanese Beetles, however: they seem to like Italian food! You HAVE to try this one, it's amazing.

What are the pros? compact, good flavor

What are the cons? Not vigorous at first

Review:

I started these under lights and germination was excellent, early growth was excellent, and then the plants kind of stalled out - so much so that when gifting a basil plant to my black-thumbed sister in early June, I used a different variety because these were so puny. Now that the heat of July has hit, they are more than making up for their early puny-ness. They are strong, vigorous but compact. They also have not even attempted to flower, which is amazing because I can barely keep up with the blooms on my other varieties. I'm growing 4 in a 20 gal SmartPot with organic methods only, and I harvested a leaf as big as my hand today. The flavor is excellent and true to Genovese type. I'll be growing much more of this next year...

What are the pros? Easy to grow, easy seed saver

What are the cons? None

Review:

I got this basil to grow with my tomatoes. I'm not sure how much it benefited them, but they grew easily. They were my first plant to sprout this spring. The leaves were tasty and I let most of them flower to bring in the bees. We saved so many seeds from just 4 plants that I think I'll be giving seed packets as Christmas gifts next year! They hate cold and die off in the first frost, but seem to love our hot Georgia summers.

What are the pros? Easy to grow. Great taste!

What are the cons? Nothing!

Review:

This was very easy to grow! I had no issues and loved the flavor. I started four plants and had tons of basil all summer. It's the first week of September now and still have plenty to cut still. I plan to grow this again next year.

What are the pros? As good as Genovese

What are the cons? None

Review:

Used to grow Genovese for pesto, but switched to Emily for the compact size when I started a separate small herb bed. Flavor, color and leaf size are comparable to Genovese but plants take up less space. I used it as a cut and come again herb this year, cutting three times and each time my plants regrew nearly as tall as before, eliminating the need for large plants altogether. Perfect.
