Intermediate day. Beautiful red cipollini-type, flat gourmet onion from Italy. It is bright red in color and very flat, perfect for fresh eating or cooking. This is a very old Italian variety that was mentioned by Vilmorin in 1885. A good choice for fresh market. Early.

What are the pros? Amazing flavor

What are the cons? Difficult to grow in my area

Review:

This was a difficult onion for me to grow in our high altitude, poor alkaline sandy soil, hot dry summer winds, and worth every ounce of effort! I planted them from seed and thought they would not do anything, so I gave up on them and left them over the winter. The following year they came back strong. Their flavor is the most remarkable I've ever tasted in an onion. It's creamy sweet, with a slight bite, but mostly mild. They're perfect raw, lightly sauteed, and excellent grilled on a skewer. This year I started them indoors in January, have them partially shaded, and they're growing much faster. I'll be able to harvest in the fall. I am anxious to see if wintering over makes the difference.

What are the pros? Large, tasty

What are the cons? Do not store, not flat

Review:

Excellent germination and growth. Good flavor when picked fresh for eating. Many onions were round, some were squat, none were flat like a cipollini. Not very uniform. Do not store at all.

Review:

I grew these this year - my first attempt at onion from seed. My biggest one was about 3" in diameter. Although they were not all very large, pretty much every seed germinated and produced. The onions were beautiful and had excellent flavor. Had them fresh in salads, salsa and cooked with them. Will grow these again next spring and I am attempting to grow some of these into winter... we'll see how they do.

Review:

I grew this for the first time in 2009 and it was spectacular. Excellent flavor that can be thinly sliced and added to salad, potato salad, or any other use you can think of for red onions. This is going in my garden again in 2010.
