60 days. Old Austrian heirloom; the name means “speckled like a trout.” A superb, gorgeous Romaine lettuce that is highly splashed in deep red. Very beautiful and tasty.

What are the pros? tender, sweet, slow to bolt

What are the cons? none

Review:

This is one of my two great performers this year in lettuce. It's staying sweet even after a week of 90 degree days. Spinach bolted early but this and salad bowl lettuce just keep on giving. The leaves are so tender on my plants there's no way I can see that a market gardener could use this--too hard to store and transport--but for home use, this is a marvelous and pretty lettuce. The cleaned and dried leaves hold up 5 days in the fridge. A lot of lettuces with red have a bitter undertaste to me, but not this one. Can't recommend it highly enough. I'm zone 6, and it's been a crazy wet spring in 2019, and the only issue with the lettuce is that the storms can really pound it into the ground. I lose a couple lower leaves, but the rest perks back up the next day. Perfect for taking the outer leaves and leaving the rest to grow to harvest again 3 or 4 days later.

What are the pros? Adaptable, Disease Resistant

What are the cons? None

Review:

I love head lettuces, but have terrible luck growing them in my area: they often fail to head and bolt; and they commonly suffer from bottom rot and various leaf spot ailments. But I'm stubborn, and keep trialing and re-trialing cultivars. Forellenschluss/Freckles has, thus far, proved my most dependable romaine/cos. It seems to have a good balance of cold and heat tolerance---though it's probably not good for extremes in either case---, it resists bolting in fluctuating weather and heads reliably in both spring and fall, and it has the best resistance to foliar diseases I've seen in any lettuce. (NB: My preliminary trials with speckled bibb/butterhead types such as Sanguine Ameliore and Bunte Forellenschluss also suggest that these may have better disease resistance than many other cultivars. Maybe there's some magic in those freckles?) It's also pretty, mildly flavored and (for a romaine) tender. If you have trouble growing romaine reliably, give this one a try.

What are the pros? Taste, appearance, slowto bolt

What are the cons? See below

Review:

We had a bad lettuce year. In zone 7A, these didn’t start growing until two weeks ago. Of the varieties I grew this one did better than others, and I am going to grow it again because I believe I just had a bad experience due to weather

What are the pros? love taste and slow to bolt

What are the cons? none

Review:

Love this lettuce although I had trouble convincing my market customers to buy it. Wonderful delicate leaves with nice flavor. Seemed to be slower to bolt than other types I had. I grow it for my own personal use. Definitely would recommend it. Very colorful too.

What are the pros? What is not to like?

What are the cons? nothing

Review:

I am growing a mix of these, merlots, Merveille Des Quatre Saisons and butter crunch. Very beautiful display, but this one is by far my favorite. I love the tall speckled leaves and how gorgeous they look on any plate.Crisp texture and crisp color! Use this in a caesar salad as a starter for dinner guests and I guarantee your guests won't stop talking about them. A definite winner and guaranteed a spot in my garden every year.
