(Allium sativum) Softneck. A mellow artichoke-style garlic from the Pacific Northwest. Chet Stevenson found this variety growing in an old, abandoned garden in Tonasket, Washington, in the 1960s. This variety produces 10 to 20 cloves with a lovely mild flavor suitable for eating raw. It has a good storage life of 5 to 6 months. This variety is best suited to the Pacific Northwest, though it can easily grow in other climates.
Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs
Growing Tips
Chet's Italian garlic grows best in well-draining soil with a pH between 6.5 and 7.0. Adding compost or aged manure before planting can enhance yields. Plant in a location that gets full sun and good air circulation. Planting cloves 2-3 inches deep and 2-4 inches apart helps the plants grow better.
When to Grow
The ideal time to plant Chet's Italian garlic is in the fall, about four to six weeks before the first hard freeze. This variety grows best in USDA zones 3-10. You can also check local freeze dates to optimize planting time.
How to Sow and Plant
Separate the garlic bulbs into individual cloves just a few days before planting. Keep the skins intact. Plant the cloves vertically, with the root end down, about 2-3 inches deep and 2-4 inches apart. Space rows about 12 inches apart to allow for growth.
How to Grow
Chet's Italian garlic requires about an inch of water per week during the growing season. Then you can reduce watering as the harvest approaches. Mulching can help retain moisture and regulate temperature. Fertilize with a balanced 10-10-10 or 5-5-5 fertilizer in spring. Proper drainage and full sun exposure are very important for healthy bulb development.
