Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

German Extra Hardy garlic thrives in well-drained, fertile soil with a pH of 6.0-7.0. It is very winter-hardy, making it ideal for colder climates. This garlic variety prefers full sun, requiring at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. Amend the soil with organic matter such as compost to enhance fertility and drainage.

When to Grow

Plant German Extra Hardy garlic in the fall, about six weeks before the first hard freeze. This timing allows the garlic to form roots before the ground freezes. In milder climates, it can also be planted in late winter or early spring, but fall planting generally yields larger bulbs. The bulbs typically mature in mid-summer, around July or August.

How to Sow and Plant

Preparation: Loosen the soil to a depth of at least 6 inches and mix in compost. Break the bulbs into individual cloves, keeping the husk intact.
Planting: Plant cloves 2-3 inches deep, with the pointed end up. Space cloves 4-6 inches apart in rows 12 inches apart.
Mulching: Apply a thick layer of mulch, such as straw or leaves, to protect the cloves from freeze-thaw cycles.
Watering: Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Reduce watering as the bulbs near maturity to prevent rot.

How to Grow

Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) in early spring and continue monthly until scapes appear. Use organic options like fish emulsion or compost tea.
Weeding and pest control: Keep the garlic bed weed-free to avoid competition for nutrients and moisture. Garlic is relatively pest-resistant, but ensure proper air circulation to prevent fungal diseases like white rot.
Scape removal: Trim the flower stalks (scapes) in late spring before they flower to encourage the plant to focus on bulb development.
