What are the pros? Very tasty, easy to grow
What are the cons? Bolts quickly in summer
This is my first year with a real garden, and I have 3 types of salad greens growing to harvest when they are small: Red Russian kale, Red Romaine (from here), and this spinach. The spinach grew really quickly, and I started harvesting right away.
It kept great in the fridge, and made for lots of delicious salads.
This year, we've had a really early summer in Washington state. After about a week of long, hot days, the spinach bolted. Everything else is growing like normal, but the spinach couldn't handle the heat.
That seems obvious, especially with a name like "Giant of the Winter," but, you know, I'm new to this. :)
Will definitely grow again, but I think I'll find a different variety for my spring/summer garden. At least I get to plant the Rocky Top lettuce mix now...
