Description

(Zingiber officinale). Your order includes 3 plants. Ginger root is the rhizome or underground stem of this Asian plant. Ginger root can be harvested at any time, but plants require several months of hot and fairly humid conditions to make the maximum yield. Plants may reach 4 feet in height. Mature roots are plump and sleek outside, white, juicy and aromatic within. Most plants will be 3”-7” in height. Please make sure you are ready for your order in your zone as these young, tender plants generally have no resistance to cold.

  • 4-6 hours of partial sun or dappled shade
  • Planting depth: 2-4 inches

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Perennial in Zone 7 and above. In Zones 6 and colder, grow in pots and bring indoors for the winter. Transplant to gallon-sized pot (with drainage holes), filled with rich, well-drained potting soil. When planting in the ground, set plants 1 foot apart into sandy loam soil that is slightly acidic. Plant ginger in partial shade or morning sun only. Keep well watered (never waterlogged) when young, then let the soil dry out as foliage begins to brown in the fall, indicating that this is pre-harvest time. WARNING: PLANTS ARE VERY YOUNG AND TENDER. DO NOT PUT THEM OUTSIDE UNTIL ALL DANGER OF FROST HAS PASSED.

When to Grow

Plant Edible Root ginger in spring after the last frost date when the soil temperature consistently stays above 70°F. If you’re not sure how to find your first and last frost dates, consult our blog post 'Our Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources.'

How to Sow and Plant

Choose a location with dappled sunlight and rich, well-drained soil. Soak rhizomes in water for a few hours before planting.  Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and cover with soil up to the root flare. Space rhizomes 12-18 inches apart to allow room for spreading. Water thoroughly after planting, and keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy until new shoots emerge.

How to Grow

Keep Edible Root ginger in a warm, humid environment with temperatures between 75°F and 85°F. Water regularly, allowing the soil to stay moist but not waterlogged. Feed with a balanced fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season. Reduce watering as the plant enters dormancy in fall. In cooler climates, bring potted plants indoors before the first frost.

How to Save

  • Propagate Edible Root ginger through rhizome division; ginger is not usually grown from seed.
  • In early spring, when new growth appears, carefully lift the plant and cut healthy rhizomes into 2-3 inch sections with at least one growth bud.
  • Replant the sections 2-4 inches deep in moist, well-drained soil.
  • Keep warm and humid until new shoots develop.

FAQ

Can I grow Edible Root ginger indoors?
Yes! Edible Root ginger grows well indoors if provided with warm temperatures (70°F-85°F) and high humidity. Place the plant in a location with bright, indirect light. Use a well-draining potting mix and keep the soil consistently moist.

How long does it take for Edible Root ginger to mature?
Edible Root ginger typically takes 8-10 months to mature. Growth speed depends on warmth, light, and moisture. You can begin harvesting mature rhizomes once the foliage dies back in late fall or early winter.

What should I do with my Edible Root ginger plant during winter?
In USDA zones below 9, grow Edible Root ginger in containers and bring them indoors before frost. Reduce watering during dormancy. If grown in-ground, dig up rhizomes and store them in a cool, dry place until spring.
