Gourd Seeds, Giant Bello
Description
(Lagenaria siceraria). This edible gourd has been cultivated in the lush landscapes of Ghana’s Ashanti and Bono regions for at least 150 years. A prolific and easy-to-grow plant that yields gigantic fruits capable of stretching up to 2 feet in length and span an impressive 15 inches in diameter. We are thrilled to offer this highly revered heirloom, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the fantastic work of seed saver and farmer Solomon Amuzu.
Best eaten cooked, this gourd’s flavor profile is utterly unique, boasting a distinct umami flavor akin to mushrooms. In Ghanaian cuisine, it serves as a versatile alternative and substitute for meat and fish in soups, stews, and sauces, imparting depth and richness. In times past, it’s believed these gourds emerged as formidable weapons when tribes in northern Ghana heated them over a roaring fire, mounted them onto a long sturdy pole, and hurled the molten hot gourds at their unsuspecting enemies (do not try this at home).

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs
Growing Tips
The Giant Bello gourd is a large, heirloom variety that needs a long, warm growing season to reach its full potential. These gourds grow on vigorous, sprawling vines. A sturdy trellis can help manage the vines and produce cleaner, more uniformly shaped gourds. A thick layer of mulch is highly recommended to retain moisture and suppress weeds, as the vines will quickly cover a large area.
When to Grow
In long-season regions, sow seeds directly in the garden once the soil has warmed to about 70 F. For short-season growers, start seeds indoors three weeks before the last frost to give the plants a head start. Giant Bello gourds require a long frost-free period, so northern growers should plan accordingly. If you’re unsure of your last frost date, consult our blog post ‘Our Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources.’
How to Sow and Plant
Seeds germinate best at 75-90 F, so ensure warm soil before planting. Sow seeds 1 inch deep in nutrient-rich, well-draining soil. After the last frost, transplant seedlings into the garden, spacing them 18-24 inches apart. The vines will trail aggressively, so provide ample space or train them on a trellis or sturdy support structure.
How to Grow
Consistent watering is essential, especially during the early growth stages. However, avoid overwatering, as gourds dislike soggy soil. Mulch to help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, which can become difficult to manage once the vines spread. Since gourds rely on insect pollination, hand-pollinating may be necessary if natural pollinators are scarce. For optimal flavor and the best culinary experience, harvest and consume the fruit while young and tender; older fruit can be eaten by removing the skin and flesh until reaching a softer tender texture.
How to Save
-
Gourds are easily cross-pollinated, so it is advisable to isolate different seed-saving varieties up to 1/2 mile to ensure seed purity.
-
A minimum of 15 plants of each variety should be grown to avoid inbreeding issues. Harvest fruit before it has dried out when it is still green in color but has developed a tough skin.
-
Scoop seeds to dry; they will remain viable for about 4 years when stored properly in a sealed container in the refrigerator.
FAQ
How long does it take for Giant Bello gourds to mature?
They need about 120-150 days to fully develop, so make sure you can provide a long growing season before the temperatures cool down.
Do I need a trellis for Giant Bello gourds?
A trellis is optional but recommended. It helps keep the gourds off the ground, reducing the risk of rot and producing straighter, cleaner gourds.
How do I know when my Giant Bello gourds are ready to harvest?
Gourds are ready when they develop a hard shell. If the vine has died back and the gourd sounds hollow when tapped, it is fully mature.
