Small, deep-purple blooms, with a bright red star in their throats; very colorful and unique. This Bavarian heirloom was one of the original varieties that gave the Whealys the idea to start Seed Savers Exchange. We were really impressed by its beauty.

What are the pros? Coloring

What are the cons? None

Review:

The coloring of these flowers tops all others, the deepest purple with a red star. Deep in the throat it appears there is a light shing through it. It reminds me of a Christmas bulb. As all glories do, once planted they reseed forever so do not plant in,a place that won't be permanent. Plant on your farm or garden fence and enjoy forever.

What are the pros? NO likes!

What are the cons? Invasive

Review:

I planted a few seeds 40 years ago....I fight them constantly. They have spread EVERYWHERE and nothing kills them. They totally covered my blueberries when I was out of town for a month, all over the vegetable garden and flower beds...DO NOT plant them unless you want to fight them the rest of your gardening life!

What are the pros? Easy to grow, beautiful

What are the cons? takes over the world

Review:

We love this morning glory. They are super easy to grow and gorgeous!! But be warned, they will take over the world if you give them the chance. The only time this has been a problem for us has been this last year when the morning glories wanted to visit with the beans next to them. I should not have planted them close together, but with limited space I had no choice. The problem was quickly solved with a pair of clippers. In fact, some clippings landed near our wheel barrow by the shed and they took off. Now we have to rescue the wheel barrow before they start to grow. If you want something that grows quickly, looks stunning and spreads quickly this is the one for you. It also comes back fairly well, even in this climate. The flowers glow from the center and are spectacular.

What are the pros? Beautiful color, can save seed

What are the cons? none

Review:

I got a packet of these from Baker Seeds a few years ago, and since then I've been saving seeds from the plants every year. They're really easy to harvest, easy to sprout (just remember to soak them in water before planting), and grow true from seed. The flowers are just the most beautiful, rich, deep purple, and they harmonize well with many other flowers. One of my favorite plants ever; my garden will never be without Grandpa Ott's.
