What are the pros? Beautiful melons, great taste
What are the cons? Prone to sunburn
These are wonderful melons; when full-grown they’re a nice army green color with dark green stripes and they grow into a distinctive oval shape with a flat bottom, almost bell-like. The photo here doesn’t do them justice. They have a wonderful classic “watermelon” flavor, sweet-and-tangy with delightfully tangy juice.
They’re roughly the size of Crimson Sweet melons, perhaps a little smaller, and just as easy to grow; I even think they taste better. If you like Crimson Sweet but want some variety this is a good option.
If there’s one downside it’s that the melons are prone to sunburn; they’re darkly colored and over a foot tall when grown so the leaves don’t protect them. I can also say they’re not as heat resistant as some other watermelons: when the temperatures get into the low hundreds some of the melons will stop growing if you don’t get them water almost daily. Nonetheless, they’re highly recommended and deserve some recognition.
