What are the pros? Effortless, lots of flowers
What are the cons? Top heavy, break in high winds
Today is October 11th and my plants are still loaded with flowers. We had a super dry summer with a few episodes of high winds, causing these 3.5' tall plants to break off and fall over. I was so upset, but was shocked a week or so later when the branches that were lying on ground sprouted roots and started growing as new plants, bigger and stronger as if no damage had ever been done!
Baker Seeds' description warns that these marigolds get huge, but "huge" doesn't seem adequate to describe their size in comparison to "normal" marigolds! They were planted in awful clay soil, got very little water most of the summer, but they're like the EverReady Flowers, let me tell ya. I have been collecting seeds from each spent flower; I will probably have in excess of 10K seeds when these Little Shop of Horrors wanna-bes are done for the year.
They're pretty, they're enormous, and they'll need to be staked.
