What are the pros? easy to grow, slow bolt
What are the cons? doesn't like 90 degrees
this was the most delicious lettuce I've ever had from a garden, it was buttery and crisp!

What are the pros? strong producer
What are the cons? none
Black Seeded Simpson did really well for me last year. So well that when I got bored this winter, and ended up building a hydroponics system, this was the lettuce I chose to try. It produced well both outdoors in soil, and indoors in my hydro system. I'm currently growing 8 plants hydroponically, and harvesting them on a cycle to have salads often throughout the week. Once the weather warms, i'll be planting my remaining BSS seed outside to kick off the soil grown salad season.

What are the pros? always reliable
This lettuce should have more reviews because it deserves lots of people singing its praises.
We've grown BSS for many years and it never disappoints, even as a seedling it's hardy. It germinates very well, is easy to grow, tender and very tasty. We have springs that are uneven - unseasonal heat one week and snow the next but this lettuce just does not care. BSS does well when grown in the spring here but even better in the fall. We grow ours in a raised bed. If I had to grow only one variety of lettuce it would be this one.

What are the pros? Easy grow
What are the cons? None
This lettuce is the easiest to grow that I have ever tried. I let it go to seed and now it sprouts in my lawn every spring. The quail that eat all my greens seedlings can't find it in the lawn. I also have red leaf, buttercrunch, mustard greens, and Italian parsley that have naturalized. It's fine with me as I'd rather grow salad than grass anyway.
