What are the pros? Beautiful, drought tolerant
What are the cons? Burns can be serious
I've grown this plant for five or six years now, and it's been a pretty, lacy companion to my fig tree and rose bushes. But two summers ago I was weeding on a hot, sunny day and did NOT watch where my knees were going. I brushed up against my rue, and by the next day had a second-degree burn developing on the outside of my leg.
Luckily macerated plantain leaf sorted the blistering, but it took two-plus weeks to heal and left a dark-colored splotch on my leg that didn't clear until the following year.
The moral: phytophotodermatitis is nothing to sneeze at. I'm keeping my rue exactly where it is, but I only weed in that spot in the evening, and wear gloves if I have to handle the plant directly.
