(Ruta graveolens) A historic herb whose use dates back to ancient times—rue is mentioned in the New Testament. The evergreen plants are a rich sea-green, quite distinctive even from a distance, forming a compact mound in the herb garden. Thrives in poor sandy soils and hot, dry sites.

We have recently added this warning to the packet, after we were contacted with this information, and did some extensive research. WARNING: NOT TO BE TAKEN INTERNALLY. Rue is believed to induce miscarriage in pregnant women and is known to cause dermatitis in sensitive individuals. We do not recommend this or any herb as a treatment for any ailment. Please exercise caution and follow advice only from qualified health-care professionals.

What are the pros? Grows here in AZ

What are the cons? slow growing

Review:

This sprouted where NOTHING grows- by our sandy, hot dry rocky mailbox and also planted in a wet, boggy shady area beside the house. It is slower growing so far, hoping it takes off when the weather heats up. I have no idea whether it will handle the Arizona heat, I sure hope so. It seems to be able to tolerate lesser care than I give to my other plants.

Growing Rue Herb – Tips For Rue Plant Care Rue By: Heather Rhoades Printer Friendly Version Image by Quinn Dombrowski The rue herb (Ruta graveolens) is considered to be an old fashioned herb garden plant. Once grown for medicinal reasons (which studies have shown to be mostly ineffective and even dangerous), these days rue plants are rarely grown in the garden. But just because an herb has fallen out of favor for its original intent does not mean that it can’t have a place in the garden for other reasons. What is Rue Plant? While little known, growing rue herb in the garden can be helpful to a gardener in a number of ways. Its strong smell is a repellent to many creatures, including dogs, cats and Japanese beetles. Because of this, it makes an excellent companion plant. It has semi-woody growth, which means that it can be pruned into hedges. It attracts some typess of butterflies, and, last but not least, makes a lovely cut flower. For all of these reasons, it is beneficial to a garden

What are the pros? Beautiful, drought tolerant

What are the cons? Burns can be serious

Review:

I've grown this plant for five or six years now, and it's been a pretty, lacy companion to my fig tree and rose bushes. But two summers ago I was weeding on a hot, sunny day and did NOT watch where my knees were going. I brushed up against my rue, and by the next day had a second-degree burn developing on the outside of my leg. Luckily macerated plantain leaf sorted the blistering, but it took two-plus weeks to heal and left a dark-colored splotch on my leg that didn't clear until the following year. The moral: phytophotodermatitis is nothing to sneeze at. I'm keeping my rue exactly where it is, but I only weed in that spot in the evening, and wear gloves if I have to handle the plant directly.

What are the pros? smell and pollinators

What are the cons? smell can stay on hands allday

Review:

I'm looking forwards to growing this herb this year I love its smell and vigorus growth habbit!! I used to grow it in Southern Ca and I hope it will tolerate the humidity here in Tn. I also wanted to add a warning for others who may not be familiar with it - be warned Rue has been known to induce labor or miscarages in some women!!!! - its often used in La and surrounds as a tea for menstral cramps but everyone in the nursery I worked in was warned of this aspect so I thought I should pass it along
