What are the pros? Nice flavor, easy to grow
What are the cons? Bugs like these
Grew three types of cowpeas this year in College Station Texas. The Big Red Rippers (always a winner down here), White Whipperwill and these (for the first time). These came up within just days beating the other two to sprot by nearly two weeks. They matured first only to get attacked by bugs, yet from 10 seeds after sharing the rest of the pack with friends, we ended up with 1/2 cup of tiny peas jam paked with flavor. We like to grow organic yet if you see the leaves of these turn yellow (in Central Texas at least) look close and find something to kill the thousands of tiny black bugs or they will suck the life out of an kill these plants in 48 hours or less. No biggie as we have a lot of peas this year and the low yield made for a very special and tasty cowpea soup. Will grow from saved seed next year as well.
